By far one of the most complete and stable versions of Linux for the Acer C720 is called GalliumOS (Based on Xubuntu). This guide will show you how to install it and allow you to choose to boot to ChromeOS or Linux every time you switch on your Acer C720 Chromebook. Before following this guide, note that this will wipe your Chromebook so backup any files you might have stored on the internal memory first. This guide shows you how to install it:
- Whilst logged in to your Chromebook, Press
ESC + Refresh(F3) + Power
- The Recovery screen says “Chrome OS is missing or damaged.” It isn’t, actually — this screen normally just appears when your Chrome OS installation is damaged. Press CTRL+D at the Recovery screen.
- You’ll see a screen saying “To turn OS Verification OFF, press Enter.” Press Enter to enable developer mode.
- Load ChromeOS by pressing
CTRL+D
at the white "OS verification is OFF" screen - Configure your Wi-Fi network or plug in ethernet cable.
- Login to Google account.
- Switch to Virtual Terminal by pressing
CTRL+ALT+top row right arrow(F2)
- Type
chronos
to login and enter the shell (Screen showschronos@localhost
)
- Type the following command
curl -Os https://chrx.org/go && sh go -d galliumos
(Note: -Os is the letter 'O', NOT a zero!) - Press 'enter' to confirm system configuration data and wait for system to download the core image file. When the download is complete, it will begin installing automatically and download some extra packages required to run (approx. 10 minutes)
- When the process has completed, it will ask you to press Enter to reboot, do it!
- Load GalliumOS by pressing
CTRL+L
(L for Linux!) at the white "OS verification is OFF" screen - The default username and password for GalliumOS is 'chrx'. Type
chrx + enter
twice to login.
Now when you turn on your Chromebook, you can press
CTRL+D
for ChromeOS or CTRL+L
for Linux (GalliumOS)Optional - Install Kodi
- Once GalliumOS is installed, boot into Gallium (Steps 13-14 above)
- Ensure you are connected to internet through WiFi or ethernet.
- Open the main program menu (bottom left icon)
- Click on 'Terminal Emulator'
- Type the following commands (press enter after each line):
sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi
Type chrx if prompted for your password. Press Y if asked a Y/n question regarding install.
6. Close the terminal emulator (top red x). You should now find Kodi in the 'Multimedia' program directory (bottom left icon > Multimedia > Kodi media center)

- To load files from USB stick, view them with the file manager in GalliumOS (2nd icon from bottom left of screen > Click on USB/SDcard name under 'DEVICES' list on top left of window). They will now appear in Kodi once it's opened.
- To exit Kodi, press 'S' key and select 'Exit'
- To make Kodi turn off subtitles by default: While playing a video, bring up the on screen display and select the audio options -> Turn off "subtitles" -> scroll down and select "save as default for all videos"
