About 3 months ago, I was having a conversation with one of my best friends about the Nexus 7.  We were discussing the fact that the screen just seems a little too small (for him anyway).  Although I disagreed with him about the screen size, he told me he had actually sold his Nexus 7 because he just wasn't using it enough.  I felt bad about this because it was me that had originally recommended it to him.  It turns out he's been using his mums iPad because the screen was so much clearer and large enough for standard desktop rendering of pages without zoom being required.  This got me thinking and I agreed, desktop pages are not really useable on the Nexus 7 without pinching to zoom.

So I started a quest of my own to discover an affordable, high resolution, large screen tablet that wasn't cheap and nasty (as you're sure to find plenty of those on eBay!).  Then I came across this:

Introducing the Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ (for those that don't know it already!), at just £179 brand new or around £130.00 on eBay; this bit of hardware is an absolute steal!.  It turns out that Barnes and Noble are struggling to shift these things, the main reason in my mind is because of the dominance of Amazon Kindle in the UK and the fact they ruin the whole device with a heavily skinned restricted version of Android (which is pretty slow!).  However, Android, being Android is customisable and hackable, I knew someone must have found a way to get rid of that nasty Nook skin!

It turns out no-one had managed to unlock the device properly yet, but it was possible to do what's called a 'Hybrid Install'.  Hybrid installs distribute Android accross the device & the SD card, as it wasn't (read on later!) possible at the time to overwrite the stock ROM completely.  The other option was to run Android directly from the SD but the benefit of Hybrid means you can get faster system performance by sharing the internal memory.  So I've been using this Hybrid system for a while now until yesterday when the developer 'verygreen', (who also developed the custom android ROM and hybrid system) announced he had managed to get the system running natively from the internal memory and completely overwrite the stock system.  This means no more memory card requirement for booting into custom Android and a much faster experience as a result.  So originally, with the Hybrid SD system, you could boot into the Barnes and Noble stock ROM or choose to run the customised ROM.  Now you can finally overwrite that entire stock system with the customised one which means:

A very affordable, 1080p, 10 inch tablet, with really good hardware specifications in general, running almost 'Vanilla' Cyanogenmod Android experience for less than £179!

All in all, I'd say mission accomplished!  I've already donated £15 to the developer for all his hard work.  I just wish more people would now realise what an absolute bargain this whole thing is and buy more Nook HD+ devices, because this should bring more developers to the table and improve the ROM even more!  Check out the thread by Verygreen regarding this latest ROM guide and have a good look at that Nook HD+ spec, I'm sure you'll agree it's a very tempting proposition!
